Flashback to 2014, when Uttarakhand’s then-Congress government orchestrated a political coup so spectacular that BJP-elected members Sumitra Prasad and Pushkar Nyal were installed overnight as president and vice-president of the Panchayat. Nyal himself was a senior RSS activist. Even two other BJP officials—Pratap Gorkha and Kṛṣhnānand Kānḍpal—helped secure this switch.

2014: A One-Sided Victory for Congress
The takeover was engineered by a faction of Congress—especially cabinet ministers Dr. Indira Hridayesh, Yashpal Arya, and Harish Durgapal—in a 31-member council that totaled just 16 votes. With razor-thin margins, Congress men held both top positions for the fourth consecutive time. That flipped the script despite voters choosing BJP-backed candidates. Remarkably, Congress has not held these positions in Nainital Panchayat since.
2025: History Repeats — This Time in Reverse?
This year, BJP appeared poised for a smooth win. But Congress, without contesting directly, co-opted at least three BJP members to undermine BJP’s dominance. Sources say BJP hit back in kind—accusing Congress of abducting two of its erstwhile supporters and two more Congress members. The elections have now sputtered into crisis, with a three-day delay in results. It remains to be seen how far this political tug-of-war can go.
